Ramadan in Qatar

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar — a sacred period of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs as an act of devotion.

In Qatar, Ramadan transforms daily life. The Moon Sighting Committee officially declares its start, cities are adorned with decorations, and the traditional Ramadan cannon fires at sunset to signal Iftar. Working hours are reduced nationwide, and evenings come alive with prayers, family gatherings, and communal meals at Souq Waqif, Katara, and mosques across the country.

Qatari Ramadan Culture

Garangao

14th Night • 3 March 2026

Qatar's most beloved Ramadan tradition. Children dress in traditional clothing and go door-to-door collecting sweets while singing the Garangao song. Neighbors prepare nuts, dried fruits, and candies. Major celebrations are held at Souq Waqif, Katara, and malls throughout Doha.

Ramadan Cannon

Daily at Maghrib

The iconic cannon fires at sunset each day to signal Iftar time. Broadcast live on national television, you can witness it in person at Souq Waqif, Katara Cultural Village, or the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque.

Iftar & Suhoor

Traditional Meals

Families gather for Iftar at sunset and Suhoor before dawn. Traditional dishes include Harees (wheat and meat porridge), Tharid (bread with meat broth), Machboos (spiced rice), and Luqaimat (sweet dumplings). Al Ghabga feasts are held late at night after Tarawih prayers.

Tarawih & Laylat al-Qadr

Nights of Prayer

Extended Tarawih prayers are held nightly after Isha. The last ten nights are especially significant — Muslims seek Laylat al-Qadr (Night of Power), believed to be when the Quran was revealed. Many observe I'tikaf (spiritual retreat) at mosques during this time.
